Phoenix Light Rail Grand Opening, December 2008

Here is EVERYTHING you need to know about the Metro Light Rail grand opening in December, 2008. After two long years of intensive construction, and heavy traffic congestions along the light rail locations, the celebration is here!

The grand opening of METRO light rail is Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 27 and 28, with all train rides free. Fares are required on METRO beginning Jan. 1, 2009.

Station celebrations will be held Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday activities will occur along the entire 20-mile METRO alignment. There will be music, activities and exhibits at many park-n-ride and light rail station locations. Because we expect a lot of Valley residents to join us in marking this piece of Arizona history, we’ll also have shuttle buses to get you back to your car if the trains get crowded. Rides will run from 10 a.m. – 8 p.m.

Sunday will offer a more low-key opportunity to explore the METRO system, its beautiful stations and the Valley’s light rail destinations. Rides are still free from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., so if you’re not big on parties, plan to explore METRO on Sunday. Then, keep riding free right through 2008 during METRO’s regular service hours.

Fares and Transit Passes

METRO light rail and Valley Metro bus share the same fare system. An all-day pass for $2.50 is good on both local bus and light rail. All-day passes expire at 2:30 a.m. on the following day. If you buy a pass for light rail / local bus, and then decide to take a Express or RAPID bus you simply pay the difference for the upgrade.

METRO uses a proof-of-payment system. Pass cards or paper passes must be activated at station platforms or on buses before boarding the train. Passengers who fail to validate tickets or passes are subject to fines.

Reduced fares are available to children five years old and under, youths ages 6-18, seniors 65 and over, and persons with a disability. Reduced fare applies to local service only.
